Im pretty new to Linux. I been using it just a short few weeks and my issues been minimal to say the least. Everything works fine. 1 exception to this is gaming. I don’t game much anymore just here and there, I cant solve the disk write error on my secondary drive. Games in home folder work just fine. Im not gonna let it beat me however I will figure it out.

14:50 "... and it's also what I'm gonna recomment to every new user for linux" : I don't really agree with what you said. KDE is a wonderful dekstop but in my humble opinion it is intended for people who are already tech-savvy, or in a need of tinkering with a lot of options. As with my experience on KDE neon (user), the menus, configuration windows, are really plentiful of options and that's great, but these options (including advanced ones) mix up with the simple ones and makes the experience pretty daunting for newcomers. I'm gonna compare with Gnome which can feel a bit deprived of options in comparison, but the experience is IMHO more suited to less-experienced users. I think having some kind of system preference "Simple/Advanced" that hides advanced options in the first place would be a great improvement for non-advanced users. Another remark regarding the application tray and the naming used : the program names are used as primary source of information about the program : KWrite, Okular, Gwenview, Kate, ... these applications have names that follow the KDE tradition using K's in their names but are also totally obscure to what they do. Hopefully the small subtitle explains a little, but these quirks are mixed with other apps that have proper names : "Firefox Web Browser", "System Settings", "System Monitor", "Emoji Selector". Finally, I absolutely don't mean that KDE is a bad desktop. It's a wonderful solid experience for demanding users, but it also comes with its historical heritage, applications names, philosophy, and UX is not something that can change in a blink. It's going the right way towards less experienced users, as the menus are way more coherent, the UX feels way more polished. But it's still some road since I can call it a recommendation for new users. In the meantime I'd recommand more a Cinnamon, or Ubuntu Experience (or even GNOME with some out of the box extensions enabled)

I dare not NOT use KDE. People might complain about the range of settings and features but it's essential for me. Because locals here where I now live in SE Asia cannot afford new hardware, at all, leave alone the hefty requirements for Windows 11, I have ended up installing Linux on ten year old laptops "So Budi can do his homework." What happens when there is a glitch, or KDE works in a way the user does not expect? I have shipped one laptop out hundreds of miles away on a distant island for my brother in law! With KDE I can send a whatsapp message and give the user the switch to flick in system settings. Job done. Any other distro and I seriously run the risk of the setting either being unable to be changed at all or require root access editing of some hidden raw text file in techno speak. A COMPLETE non-starter, especially I have been supplying Linux to mega basketball fans whose whole life outside of school is dedicated to 'Basket.' Also, in KDE you can turn of CPU consuming desktop effects which, on older hardware, massively improves performance. Other DEs, things like transparency are part of the experience. I am not joking about ten year old laptops here. I always switch all desktop effects off. Nobody ever notices. It works. Good enough.

I'm just watching this video (at 1430 Aust EST) and am at about 7 minutes in. You could not find the RDP server in Settings. I did a search for rdp in settings and drew a blank. So I remember there's an App called Kdrc which is a remote desktop client. I opened Konsole and tried pkcon install krds (for the server) drew a blank, so I tried the next logical option in case 'protocol' was similar to 'server'. pkcon install krdp and a little bit if text scrolled past, including a reference to rdp and to 6.1, then it asked for the root password. That always means pkcon found somethign familiar. Moments later and I was back at the prompt. So I opened Settings again and searched: rdp And now it shows: Remore Desktop in the left pane. Clicking that takes us to the screen where you can toggle the remote desktop Protocol Server ON or Off. I hope that helps anyone else who might be lost (as TLE and I both seem to have been) - looking for somethign that is not installed by default. Now I just have to see if it will connect to NoMachine on my other systems . .

Still no window shading on wayland, that bug has been open for about 7 years and they've still not fixed it, I also filled a bug over a year ago where when entering full screen for the first time in apps like MPV the animation wouldn't work on X11, and nothing was ever done about it, it seems the KDE devs are more interested in adding new features than fixing bugs, and that's the biggest issue with plasma, they keep adding new features while ignoring bugs, so plasma will always be buggy, I have a much more stable experience with labwc with sfwbar, despite the fact that both of them have not even reached 1.0 status yet.

I agree! Plasma has surpassed Gnome by a country mile. I'm excited to see where Cosmic DE goes and how it competes with Gnome. In the future I see Linux DEs competing with each other instead of Windows and MacOS, which will only speed up the exponential growth of Linux for daily users. My overall experience since 2020 has improved drastically.

Problems I'm facing on Linux? Dozens if not hundreds. But the most recurring are (in random order): 1. Instability. sudo dnf/yum/apt update/upgrade/dist-upgrade can brick your OS. not doing anything can brick your OS. doing simple things like changing a theme can brick your OS. fixing issues can brick your OS. 2. Forever troubleshooting. I often encounter problems on every Linux distro I touch. An app won't install, a source won't compile, a service won't start etc. My Linux experience is mostly googling for fixes/workarounds. Last week I made a new VM with Fedora 40 Server. It took me over a week to install ONE app, although the app has a set of commands to install on RHEL, Debian and other Linux branches. And I'm not a beginner. I deploy/manage Linux servers since 2011 and am a Linux desktop user since 2007. 3. Poor documentation. a) Lack of instructions - sometimes the manual says do thing_A, then thing_B and after that thing_C, but it doesn't tell you HOW to do those things. b) Lack of known issues and fixes/workarounds - very rarely you can find those in Linux app documentation. 4. Randomness. You could have two identical PCs and do the exact same sets of commands to set up a work environment and the result could be different on both machines. 5. No fix. Some issues are just opened github posts without any response from the devs and there's no solution on Reddit, StackOverflow, ServerFault, AskUbuntu etc. 6. Relying on randos from Internet. For many things to work on Linux you have to use guides made not by distro's or app's devs but by total randos who somehow managed to make things work. But when you apply their solution it may not work or you could brick your OS. Even if it's a confirmed solution. 7. Too much CLI. I know some people prefer CLI over GUI but for me it takes too much time on Linux to do some tasks when compared to Windows where you use your mouse to do 99% things. GUI has a lot of advantages (e.g. you won't make typos, you don't need to read help files for syntax or parameters, you don't need to remember commands) for end-users and also for admins. In my admin work I'm forced (i.e. I don't have a GUI alternative) to use CLI for 1% of my time on Windows and 99% of my time on Linux.
